Thirty Years of Service to the Regional Community

Some 30 years ago, the Illawarra Regional Information Service (IRIS) commenced operations in the Illawarra Region. Its primary responsibility was to provide sufficient information to enhance the economic and social development of the region.

IRIS research customers now come from NSW, Queensland, Victoria and Tasmania. IRIS currently conducts projects for 40 Local Councils across NSW and Queensland, a range of State Government departments and private sector organisations such as BHP Billiton, BlueScope Steel, IMB Banking Services, Real Insurance, Fairfax Newspapers, Lend Lease and the WIN Corporation.

2009 marked the beginning of a new era for IRIS. Despite the challenging economic times IRIS in December 2009 undertook a bold plan to invest in its facilities and capital equipment by relocating to the University of Wollongong's Innovation campus. With the move our fieldwork capabilities to conduct national market research activities has doubled. In addition, we now have the only purpose built focus group room available in the Illawarra Region.

Today IRIS represents both a repository of vital information and sophisticated business resource for regional operators. The capabilities and outputs of IRIS have continued to grow in response to the region's needs, in a effort to ensure that all Illawarra businesses are given the best opportunity to grow and prosper. IRIS is proud of its achievements, but more so of the growth and development that has occurred in the region over the past 30 years. Given the start we have had we hope to be proud of the next 30 as well.
