REGULAR DATA SERIES

LABOUR FORCE

The labour force data series requires two quarterly publications, one from the Department of Education and Workplace Relations, and another from the Australian Bureau of Statistics. They provide an outline of unemployment and labour force statistics for local government areas and statistical regions within the Illawarra. Data series updated quarterly since May 1983.

RESIDENTIAL BUILDING APPROVALS

The Australian Bureau of Statistics releases residential building approvals data by statistical local area each quarter. This data provides a summary of house and other dwelling building approvals for the Illawarra, including private building additions. Data series updated quarterly since September 1981.

NON RESIDENTIAL BUILDING APPROVALS

Commerical building approvals data by statistical local area is released by the Australian Bureau of Statistics every quarter. The data is used to create a summary of all non residential structures approved within the Illawarra region, divided into ten commercial industry categories as well as private and public sector. Data series updated quarterly since March 1991.

REAL ESTATE SALES

This data series maintains sales and median price figures for land, houses and units. All data is recorded through the EAC multilist system. Data series updated quarterly since March 1998.

LABOUR MONITOR

The labour monitor records job advertisements that appear in the Saturday editions of the Illawarra Mercury. All available positions are categorised by type of employment (i.e. full time and part time/casual employment). This data is then compared to Australia wide figures obtained from ANZ every quarter. Data series updated quarterly since March 1980.

RENTAL MARKET MONITOR

The rental market monitor records all dwellings in the Wollongong region advertised for rent in each Saturday's edition of the Illawarra Mercury along with online rental data from domain.com.au and realestate.com.au. It contains the type of rental accomodation, facilities provided and location, as well as the cost. Data series updated quarterly since March 1980.

TOURISM IN THE ILLAWARRA

Tourism data by statistical local area is released by the Australian Bureau of Statistics each quarter. It contains hotel, room and bed number statistics, occupancy statistics and rates, and hotel/motel total takings figures. Data series updated quarterly since March 1980.

TOURISM IN THE WOLLONGONG Statistical District

Tourism data for the statistical district is released by Destination NSW each quarter. It contains visitor numbers, visitor nights, average spend per night and total expenditure figures. Data series updated quarterly since June 2003.

ILLAWARRA CONSUMER SENTIMENT MONITOR

IRIS conducts quarterly surveys of Illawarra residents to measure consumer sentiment in the Illawarra region. This research also identifies spending patterns and behavior of Illawarra residents. Released quarterly.

ILLAWARRA COAL MINING PRODUCTION

Illawarra coal mining statistics are supplied by the Coal Services each month. They detail total production, employment and productivity of coal operations in the Illawarra region. Data series updated quarterly since March 1980.

LABOUR FORCE AND RELATED PAYMENTS

Unemployment benefit recipient statistics are released every month by the Department of Education, Employment and Workplace Relations. This data series records the number of job seekers receiving such payments, sorted by customer service centre area. Data series updated monthly since June 1993.

BUSINESS SURVEY

The IRIS Illawarra Business Survey is a quarterly publication that analyses information provided by over two hundred businesses in the Illawarra. It reports on key business indicators including profitability and availability of labour, as well as outlining current industry trends and business performance by organisational size. Released quarterly.

INVESTMENT PROFILE

Investment Profile is included in the IRIS Profile Illawarra quarterly publication. It provides details on the status and value of major infrastructure, residential, industrial and commercial developments currently occuring in the Illawarra. This data is obtained directly from the organisations responsible for the investment, in the month prior to release. Released quarterly.

CONSUMER PRICE INDEX

The Consumer Price Index is released quarterly by the Australian Bureau of Statistics. It measures the average change in price over time of a basic set of consumer goods and services. Updated quarterly.

OTHER DATA SERIES

CRIME

The NSW Bureau of Crime Statistics and Research releases crime statistics and information on an annual basis. These figures represent the occurence of crime categorised by type of criminal activity in each local statistical area. Data series updated annually.

HEALTH

Health statistics for the Sydney and Illawarra regions are released annually by the South Eastern Sydney Illawarra Area Health Service. They include figures such as bed numbers for both private and public hospitals, as well as bed numbers in private nursing homes. Additional statistics provided include hospital bed occupancy rates, number of patients treated and number of staff employed. Updated annually.

CLIMATIC DATA

The Australian Bureau of Meteorology releases climatic data recorded at its Wollongong, Nowra and Bowral observation sites each month. These sites collect information such as mean, maximum and minimum temperatures, as well as average rainfall levels. Updated monthly.

EDUCATION

IRIS collects education statistics regarding primary, secondary and tertiary education institutions in the Illawarra - primarily enrollment figures and institution numbers. This data is provided by the Department of Education, Science and Training, TAFE NSW and the University of Wollongong. Updated annually.

VITAL STATISTICS

Birth and death figures and rates are obtained from the Australian Bureau of Statistics and updated annually. Each local statistical area in the Illawarra is represented individually. Updated annually.

BUSINESS COUNT

The Australian Bureau of Statistics releases business count information on an irregular basis. This information is broken down into local statistical regions, detailing the number of single location businesses in each area in each industry.

ESTIMATED RESIDENT POPULATION

Estimated Resident Population is the official measure of population in Australia. It is calculated and released by the Australian Bureau of Statistics between census years. It accounts for the components of natural increase, overseas travel, net migration and interstate movement.

MOTOR VEHICLE SALES

The Roads and Maritime Services releases new motor vehicle sales figures annually. These figures are sorted by local statistical area and include all forms of motor vehicles including passenger vehicles, buses, mobile homes and trucks. Updated annually.
